My friend and business partner Vera Babayeva (www.womencanhaveitall.com) was wondering what to do about putting her home address on her business card.

When you run a business from your home, you might not want to announce your home address to everyone. That can be scary for some people. The solution for many home based business owners is to purchase a PO Box to use, but those cost money. If you are just starting out in business it is good to keep the costs down.

I have always put my address on my card. I have never run into any problems with it during the past 10 years of doing this. However, I have received business cards from other people who do not put their address on at all. They only put information that they want people to use to communicate with them.

I find that when people exchange business cards, it is common for the other person to look and see where you are from. If you don’t have your address listed, they need to ask you. My recommended compromise in this situation is to just place your city and state (or other location, if you live outside the US) on your business card.

This suggestion takes away the problem of having to list your actual address, but still allows the recipient of your card to be able to find out where you are from.

Thank you, Vera, for the inspiration for this blog post. :)
