There’s so much information available on the internet, in books, in audios and videos. This is definitely the Age of Information. When you need to know something, you can just look it up, or ask people on twitter or FaceBook.
But can too much information be a bad thing?
It depends on what you do with all that information. As far as business owners go, I see that many mom entrepreneurs like to get as much information about how to grow their business and market their business as they can. As a business owner this is important to stay ahead. However, there are 2 major problems that I see mom entrepreneurs doing with all this information every day that you will want to try to avoid. I’m mentioning this because I find myself getting caught in the same traps over and over.
- Not studying and taking action on what you learn.
It’s easy to get the information on how to learn something new, but it’s another thing to really study it and take action on it. When you listen to an audio or a teleseminar, how many times do you listen to that recording? How often do you take the actions or steps that were outlined in the recording?
The businesses that are getting ahead are those that take action on what they learn. Don’t just attend the teleseminar; listen to the recording over and over. Write down what the person says to do and set goals for yourself to complete those actions in a reasonable amount of time. Only then will the information become something of value to you.
- Implementing a brand new idea to market your business without first deciding if that idea fits into your current business plans.
I see many mom entrepreneurs doing this. They create plans for their business, but before that plan is even completed, or before they give the plan a chance to start working, they implement something new. When you are growing a business, especially when you are marketing your business, it takes a long time for new things to take hold. You need to create a plan and then focus on that plan. Learn everything you can about the concepts for the plan you choose. Focus on just those techniques and solutions that you have initially chosen, and stick with the plan until you can track what is working or not working.
When you get a new idea from a new information source, it’s okay to just put that idea on the back burner. Set aside a separate notebook that only contains new ideas that you have gleaned from all the information you read and hear. After you have completed your current business plans and find you have time to work on a new idea, then you can pull out that notebook and choose a new strategy for your business.
When you choose that new strategy, pick one that is in alignment with what you are already doing for your business. Keep your business focused and streamlined.
New information is great and constant learning is essential, but make sure that what you learn is focused on what you need to know to get ahead. Once you find something of value, whether it’s a book, an audio, a new program, make sure that you take what you just learned and apply it to your own business and your own situation. It’s not enough to just read and listen, you must study and TAKE ACTION.
What will you take action on this week?
